online education for web design
Have any of you ever taken any online courses? I’m seriously contemplating it because I just know I have so much to learn when it comes to web design and web page construction, XHTML, CSS, etc. These courses are pretty affordable, especially if you become a member of the organization which would probably be good to do anyway.
How do you keep from getting scammed on online education? I’ve heard that can happen. I am not looking for another degree, maybe just a certification or something.
Although, I am reading this right now, and hoping to keep plugging through it. Can a book like this truly give me the understanding I need? If it goes well, maybe I’ll just keep trying to find instructional handbooks to guide me through these tricky waters. How do you learn new skills?
I'd love it if you subscribed to my RSS feed.

I picked up a book on CSS as well. I had to renew it, because I have not yet got around to reading it. Before college though, Quickstart guides were how I learned HTML on my own. CSS however is a little more difficult so an online course might be a better idea.
It is hard to judge whether or not you’re getting scammed. Just make sure you do your research – there’s probably sites that you can rate them like you can do with apartment complexes, maybe other people have already given their 2 cents.

I learned basic HTML by getting that giant orange book 7ish years ago. I learned very little CSS from old blogger friends, but I’ve forgotten most of it already.
About learning new skills in general – I buy books. It tends to be more expensive than taking classes, but I like having books to go back to.

That’s a good book. CSS Mastery is another good one. I tend to learn most by looking under the hood (viewing the page source) of other websites. Personally, the Godbit Forum and wicked smart friends continue to be my main source of learning.

my boss has offered to pay for classes for me! i’d love to do something in AutoCAD or color, and i’d especially love to do training for the products we use (that would be most beneficial, since that is what i do most and make mistakes on most…). anyway, i think the training could be done online, but the CAD classes i wouldnt mind taking at like Triangle Tech (maybe i wouldnt mind), cause i think that’s the only option!
oh and i like books and magazines. however, i do not read them for learning a “skill” so much as for “broadening the mind”.

I have heard Lynda.com is amazing for learning. They are subscription based so it is fairly affordable.

One of the greatest things about the WWW is that you can look at the markup behind every single page. It was by looking at the sources of the pages I view that I learnt how to write code (I started about 10 years ago, and I’m still learning now). Also, the W3c (http://ww.w3.org) has all the documentation for all the current specifications available for download on their site. There are myriad of other websites that have howto and and markup samples available.
I think that doing it yourself gives a greater understanding of the hows and whys (eg. why something works one way and not another). In a course (and possibly even a book), they are only likely to show you the “proper” way to do something.

Wow, you’re learning CSS? More power to you, girl. As far as online education, I’ve taken both Dreamweaver and Flash, although I can’t remember if I took them through pcc.edu or pdx.edu. Seriously though, I can’t say either were terribly good learning experiences, probably because I was going to school and working full-time way back then. If you are self-motivated, then I would also recommend the lynda.com and their books. They are really well done, and work for my kind of learning style. We just bought Adobe CS3 and it comes with a free 30-day Online Training Library subscription that I hope to start taking advantage of pretty soon.
