weekend of photos
Well… since I had a weekend where my best friends and my husband were away, I decided to go to VanTuil and pick up the 50mm 1.8 Nikkor so I could take lots of pictures to keep myself busy. I wanted to have it to sort of understand it better by using it at Christa’s wedding in Buffalo on Saturday. I was just there as a guest but I knew I’d want to take some pictures for her anyway.
It. was. so. much. fun.
Both the wedding and taking pictures with the new lens. I spoke with a few trusted sources, trying to decide between this lens and the one that is triple the price but has a little bit more of an open aperture (1.4), and they all agreed that this was the much smarter choice, not only financially but because even a little bit more aperture can give to much bokeh (that’s a very simple summation thanks to Lisa). Apparently a lot of students bought some last week so it must be popular. It only took me 4+ years with the same camera to really accessorize it
The hardest thing about it is that it has no zoom so to compose your shot you have to move back forth, back up, etc. So that was tricky to get used to. The lens definitely doesn’t work for all situations, but I needed to have an idea of what I even wanted to use it for. I think it will be great for portraits and other close up, family type or baby pictures, and of course cat pictures. It even did awesome on action shots while people were dancing! I’ll post some of those later in the week, but for now here’s some fun I had the first night I got it.
I'd love it if you subscribed to my RSS feed.

so, i love this… the new lens is awesome! i love the detail shots of drapes and the glass, and your kitty has never been prettier.
i also saw the pics of the wedding on facebook and loved her design aesthetic. amazing.

i have the canon version of the 50mm f/1.8, and it’s my favorite lens in my bag.
using prime lenses i found helps with composition, but for weddings they are tough to use due to the fast pace.
cost-wise it’s a no-brainer. sure, having the f/1.2 or f/1.4 will give you a stop or two extra, but if you aren’t in low light situations all the time it’s not really worth the extra cost.
